Wisdom (A letter to Minorities)

By: Keishra Jackson

I was once told

Honor Roll

was the road to success.

But as of now,

I’m trapped between 4 walls

in a too small desk

surrounded by beings of black

and the rest. . .

The “minorities”

Never fit to be next

because we never possessed

access to that asset

to which we were born with

called freedom.

Misled when “C” was our only “I don’t know” option

on I.S.A.T.

When Guess & Check

became apart of the method

and

when we sat with our kind enforcing isolation

Segregation….

is our own faults

In CPS.

We sit eagerly

awaiting  the next ring

to set us free

because the hallways is where it’s at

and friends are the only ones

we come to school to see.

And Of course,
Subs,
In periods 1 thru 3

. . . .

and what about ol’ girl in the knock-off Burberry

or polo?

With three minutes of fame

in the hallways

you can act a fool

like the audience

when they “boo”

a bad act at the

Showtime in Apollo.

For a second,
I FORGOT , What I Came here Fo’

I’ve heard too many times

“Reading is Fundamental”

in this corrupted establishment

where

education is fundamentally disrupted

by these wanna be Savages.

I’m just being honest.

they pay no mind to the youth

because its not like the future depends on us.

WE Don’t depend on us.

Instead

Bleached trues

and fresh shoes

with eyes glued

to the girls

(asses)sments

worried bout’ if she foreign or

if her man on one of the opps
Cor-ro-na.

There is no freedom in education.

except the freedom

to make others feel less than great

or to make us “nerds” feel like less

because we were the only ones remembered

it was a test today.

because yesterday,

you occupied the lonely hallways

Now you confused.

Claiming this subject was never introduced.

and there’s no reason

to point the finger at the system

because before we AS PEOPLE

gain freedom

we must first capture the precious entity of wisdom.

and it starts in this building.
